The Word Nerd is a text utility that anagrams a set of letters
that the user inputs. The resultant text can be output to a
text file or copied to the clipboard. Due to the large size of
the dictionaries, this demo version of the nerd only contains the
dictionaries for words of two to five letters in length.
Algorithms for anagramming six to sixteen letter words are not
included in this download.
Installing the Word Nerd.
Place the application Word Nerd into a folder on your disk.
Place all dictionary files (DICT2 through DICT5) in the same folder.
Double click on the Word Nerd.
Using the Word Nerd.
The text edit field at the top of the window is the set characters
the nerd will combine into anagrams. Click on the Sort Icon at the
top left of the window to crank up the Word Nerd (or hit the return
or enter keys).
For instance, if you type the word Macintosh and hit the enter key,
the following words will appear on the spreadsheet
AH ACT ACTS ACTIN ACTINS ACTIONS MANIHOTS MACINTOSH
AI AIM AIMS AITCH ACTION ANOSMIC MONASTIC
AM AIN AINS AMINO ANOMIC ATOMICS
AN AIS AITS AMINS ANTICS ATONICS
AS AIT AMIN AMNIC ATOMIC CAMIONS
AT AMI AMIS ANTIC ATONIC CATIONS
HA ANI ANIS ANTIS CAMION CHAMISO
HI ANT ANTI ASCOT CANTHI CHAMOIS
HO ASH ANTS ATOMS CANTOS CHITONS
IN CAM ASCI CAINS CASINO ISOTACH
IS CAN ATOM CANSO CATION MANIHOT
IT CAT CAIN CANST CHAINS MANIOCS
MA CHI CAMS CANTO CHANTS MANITOS
MI CON CANS CANTS CHIASM MASONIC
NA COS CANT CHAIN CHINAS OSMATIC
NO COT CASH CHAMS CHINOS SOMATIC
OH HAM CAST CHANT CHINTS STOMACH
OM HAS CATS CHAOS CHITON TACHISM
The word MACINTOSH is included since it is a valid entry in the
dictionary. I am not entirely certain what MANIHOTS means, but
anyone who owns a mac must surely understand MONASTIC!
Anagramming can be good fun and even give insights as to a person's
true character, for instance;
George Bush: Rehouse Gougers Buggers Bore Beer
Ronald Reagan: Androgen Adrenal Gonadal Golden Grand
President Reagan: Grandparents Predesignate Tragediennes
Ozzy Osbourne: BOZO BONER BOOZE BOYOS BOZOS BURNS ONERY
OZONE SNORE ZEROS BONERS BOOZER BOOZES
BUZZER BUZZES OZONES REBOZO SNOOZE UNROBE
ZONERS BONZERS BOOZERS BUZZERS ONEROUS OZONOUS
REBOZOS SNOOZER UNROBES UNSOBER BURNOOSE
and let's not forget SOBER !
Inside Macintosh: Idiotisms Inanities Incessant Insomnia
Disenchant Dissociate Distension Indecision
Nicotinism Disenchants etc!
Lets try some trade names:
Letraset = Alertest
Mindscape = Pandemics
Multiplan = Platinum
Microsoft = Comforts
The list could go on and on but I'll leave that fun task up to you.
If you would like to do something useful with the words generated
select Copy from the Edit menu and all words on the spreadsheet
will be copied to the clipboard. You also have the option of Save
from the File menu which will save all words to a text file.
You may format the output words (clipboard or file) by selecting
settings from the Output menu.
These are;
A. Capitalize
All REBOZOS
none rebozos
first Rebozos
B. Format With
This character will be placed at the end of each word.
The STR5555 option is a string which can be attached to the end of
each word. You may change the STR 5555 using a resource editor to
any string you like. It is initially the string Return Tab.
The word nerd can be used for many daily tasks. For instance, DELPHI
has (or did have, last time I checked) a game called scramble which
gave you sixteen characters which you had to choose from to create new
words. The winner of this game was the one who found the most words.
The nerd could give you a truly unfair advantage at this game.
You could also use it to help you out in many word games in the newspaper
or over a game board such as SCRABBLE, when your opponent isn't watching.
About the dictionaries.
You may be tempted to modify the dictionaries, but please note that all
entries must be in perfect alphabetical order, or else the program will
freeze up. Best to leave them alone.
If you must use your own dictionaries, here is how I suggest you do it.
Make a text file of all your words of each size.
Dictionary 4 could have the following entries:
ABLE
ABBE
ABET
ABED
ABLY
ABRI
ABOS .... in any order you like
Sort them using a program such as Excel, or McSink into alphabetical order:
ABBE
ABED
ABET
ABLE
ABLY
ABOS
ABRI .... (or else the word nerd will freeze when run)
Add some Z's to the end of the file as a barrier, 10 words worth. For a four
letter dictionary this means add 10 ZZZZ words to the end.
Finally strip out all Non Text characters such as returns, tabs, etc.
The Fabulous Text Sucking Leech (also on Genie) can help you to do this.
Name the file DICT4 and the nerd will recognize it. You're all set.
To purchase the full blown version of the Word Nerd, Send $25 to the address
below. This purchase includes dictionaries of 2 through 16 letters (300K), and
complete anagramming capabilities to support them.
If you find bugs, please contact me on Genie at J.SHEPARDSO1. I will fix them
and get another demo version up and running as soon as possible.

With apologies to Ozzy.
Hey, I didn't name you!
